Brownfield designation sought by firm to help redevelop contaminated Martin County site

A New Jersey construction company's local affiliate wants to spend nearly $9 million for environmental cleanup and redevelopment of a contaminated 8-acre site along the St. Lucie Canal in western Martin County.

But the County Commission first needs to designate the property as a brownfield site before the company can access state corporate tax credits.

Ferreira Construction's affiliate — 9670 Southwest Marine Way LLC — owns the property at 9670 Southwest Marine Way, just south of Southwest 96th Street and just west of Interstate 95.

Brownfield sites are properties where an expansion, redevelopment or reuse of the site "may be complicated by actual or perceived environmental contamination," according to Florida law.

"(The brownfields program) generates economic development, creates some jobs" and "results in an environmentally rehabilitated property," explained Brett Brumund, an attorney with The Goldstein Environmental Law Firm, which is representing the property owner.
