A new Florida law set to come into effect on Wednesday, October 1, will force landlords in the state to disclose any known flood damage to tenants before they sign a lease lasting a year or more. Home sellers, on the other hand, will have to inform prospective buyers of any known damage caused by flooding.
The measure is one of a series of legal actions pushed by lawmakers across the country trying to protect the growing U.S. renting population against hidden and rising costs, including so-called junk fees. It also addresses the urgent issue of the growing flood insurance gap in the U.S.—including in the Sunshine State.
Flooding has become a more frequent, more devastating threat in recent years in Florida, as well as the rest of the country, due to climate change. The National Weather Service has already issued more than 4,000 flash flood warnings across the U.S. so far this year, the highest number since the 1980s.
