No more property taxes? Is it too good to be true?

No more real estate taxes!? That sounds great, at first glance, but is it really? As I sit and ponder this proposal from Gov. Ron DeSantis, the thought of cutting or eliminating any form of taxation sounds like a great idea to me.

But is it? Is that always the case or are we eliminating one tax to just increase another? Does it then become a shell game, semantics, or even deceitful for that matter?

I pay taxes on a home and on commercial real estate. When I consider how much I spend on goods and services, on which I currently pay a 6.5% sales tax, compared to the amount I pay for real estate taxes annually, I would be better to leave property taxes in place.

Ad valorem property taxes pay for a lot of school and public safety services like police, fire and paramedics as well as for upkeep of community parks and playgrounds. Where would the money come from to cover those costs if property taxes are eliminated? State and local governments would have to fund these services some other way.

We must consider the $40 billion or more that will have to be replaced by the elimination of property taxes. How will a 12-13% sales tax affect every Floridian from every socioeconomic background? How will it be determined that these sales tax dollars are distributed (and by whom)?t.
